The harbor sidewalk, known as the malecon, is home to many sculptures along the seawall as well as what is called by locals the “big shrimp” which is actually a very large and costly sailfish.
Parking on the street is always at a premium but recently a multilevel car park was built opposite the harbor which is a tremendous help if you just wish to wander and not be concerned about time. Talking of time please be aware that most of the shops in el Centro close for the Siesta hours of 2.00p.m. to 4.30p.m, so plan you shopping trip accordingly
new attraction in downtown "El Centro"
There are various squares along the malecon which are home to many celebratory events which occur during the course of each year, including the square which has a statue of Benito Juarez, known as father to the New Republic of Mexico.
Plans are in the works to build a new Cruise ship terminal which will be almost in the centre of the malecon.
In el Centro there are many small restaurants along the colonnade as well as good tourist shopping and right in the midst of town is the indoor market which has the very freshest produce, fish and meats. It is certainly worth climbing the stairs to overlook the market to take photos of a typical Mexican Market scene.
